This server is built on the security principle of zero trust: no individual working on the project needs to trust the others. To achieve this, contributors are unaware of one another's real identities and are united only by a passion for the Classic WoW community. Each contributor participates at their own risk, and no single individual has enough power to take down the project .
Built on Turtle WoW's 1.17.2 patch, we aim to restore content through Turtle's 1.18.1 patch (and have already made significant progress). We have deep respect for the developers who came before us and for the incredible work the Turtle team has done for the Classic WoW community. Our goal is to preserve the art they created and, once that is done, continue where they left off.
Creating a character on a private server is an act of trust, and we appreciate everyone who chooses to trust OctoWow with their time. To preserve that trust, we have implemented a model of decentralized redundancy to ensure all character and account information is preserved amongst at least eight independent and anonymous "Knowledge Keepers". Should any technical or legal issues occur with the primary server or database, this model ensures the other Knowledge Keepers have what is needed to restore the community and resume operations within days.
In the interest of transparency, we wanted to share with you some updates about our team. When we started this project as a small group, we had a goal of 100-200 concurrent player population, just enough so that we could enjoy the game a bit ourselves. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and interest that we have received and have far surpassed that initial goal!
As our community has ballooned in size, we have tried to adapt quickly to grow with it. As a result we have more than doubled our team size in the last two weeks. Onboarding new members is a fun experience and we have been absolutely blown away by the passion and talent of all those who have reached out to help in all manner of ways!
